Pac-Man is no stranger to the mobile world, but most of his games are just the classic maze runner scaled down to phone size. Wouldn’t it be nice if the yellow chomper got a game that’s actually meant for small screens. A glitchy maze where anything can happen with one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. This game is totally worth a download.
It recently launched Pac-Man 256, an Android and iOS game that blends old-school gameplay with the endless runner format that you’ve seen in big-name smartphone titles like Temple Run.
Pac-Man 256 was developed for Bandai Namco by Hipster Whale, the studio best known for the mobile game Crossy Road. Their popular car-dodging adventure is sometimes described as “Infinite Frogger,” so it’s not a huge surprise to see them reimagine another classic ’80s arcade game with similarly endless levels.
How to play pac man 256
You still have to navigate twisty corridors and avoid ghosts, but this time you’re also outracing Pac-Man‘s infamous level 256 glitch — no power pellet will save you if you move too slowly. It’s an intriguing concept, although you’ll want to watch out for the ugly side of modernization… that is, in-app purchases.
Most arcade games that have been transitioned to a touch screen interface tend to suffer from the lack of crisp control. This is not the fact for 256. Granted, it’s not an exact replica of traditional Pac-Man, but it’s better for it. The addition of power-ups and ghosts with new patterns of behavior add replay value.
You can last quite a long time without paying a cent, but Bandai Namco is hoping that you’ll shell out anything from 99 cents to $8 to get a credit boost and keep your run going. So long as you don’t mind the occasional cash grab, though, this could be a good way to rekindle your nostalgia while you’re waiting for the bus.

The game is free to download, and every day you’ll be only allotted six credits. Each play costs one credit, though you can use another credit to continue when you die—but only once. After that, you’ll start over at the beginning. You can also choose “free play” which will allow you to keep going after you’re out of credits, but with none of the power-ups that make it so much fun.
